Have you ever been to a an upholstery workroom? It can seem a tad chaotic at first glance, with foam rubber shapes and fabrics and chair and sofa frames strewn about here and there. But trust me, it is a place where beautiful pieces of furniture are being created midst the noise of sewing machines and hammering. I’ve been to more than several and I can always spot one that is in the A+++ category . Such it was on my recent visit to check out Naula Workshop in East Williamsburg , Brooklyn.
First I must introduce you to the brains behind the operation, Angel Naula. I need to inform you that he is meticulous about the type of work he produces in his workshop. I also need to let you know that Angel is quite active in the interior design community here in New York City, and often donates his finished pieces to designers to use in charity events, such as the South Hampton Show House and the Kips Bay Summer Cruise, and, in addition, creates pieces to be utilized in large design events, like the Architectural Digest Home Design Show (see post.)
Angel is also the talent behind the two terrific contemporary upholstery lines and furniture pieces available to the trade, that represent his love of modern furnishings. The lines have some fabulous sofas and club chairs that I really think are chic and sophisticated as well as an assortment of ottomans…one of my favorite things to put in a room…and cocktail tables. Plus, all of the frames for the pieces are hand made by Naula’s staff on site.
The workshop is on several floors, one being totally devoted to a showroom to showcase the Soho Collection and the Premier Collection…..the names of Naula’s two furniture lines. It is a piece of cake for anyone to walk through this showroom and really touch, look, sit, etc. at each of the different designs. It would also be a perfect place for me to bring an adventuresome client who wants to participate in the dezign furniture scene taking place in Brooklyn these days!
Don’t be fooled to think this is the only type of work being produced by Naula. They welcome the challenge of producing any custom design from interior designers and promise to deliver these items completed to perfection. They are also the people behind the scenes for many top notched antique shops and furniture companies in the city, doing all of the customized work for them. AND as Naula says,”.. let them add a dash of luxury and comfort to your personal style!”
There is a big added value to Naula’s furniture lines and their custom pieces for designers. All of these are made of responsibly sourced, hand selected hardwoods and environmentally friendly products. This is a super important factor today in the manufacturing of furniture, as there has been so much bad publicity about the toxic materials many companies use when they produce upholstered furnishings. A big thumbs up to Angel for integrating sustainability and green products into his furniture!
Loved the excursion out to Brooklyn…felt I was kinda like a dezign explorer, reaching out of my dezign comfort zone and that felt empowering. There are so many talented artisans and small manufacturers in different areas of New York City and supporting this “new blood” feels good.
Ciao, ciao ’til next time!
