KARKULA REVISITED: ON THE TRAIN TO WILLIAMSBURG!

Recently at the AD Home Design Show in March (see post) I ran into John Erik of Karkula, a very hip store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.  Several years ago I had written about his wonderful furnishings when his store was located in Tribeca and I had just started writing DEZIGNLICIOUS, and

it was great to see that he was still selling some of the coolest and best designed contemporary products on the market.

I should add to that statement, that some of his furnishings have been personally designed by him and they are some of the most beautiful pieces he has on display. But, I jump ahead of myself.

John Erik invited me to lunch in Williamsburg…always a tantalizing thought…so I promised him I’d hightail it over on the 5 & L trains and be there around 1 PM. “Twas my first official visit to the new & better Williamsburg and it was fun to see what was going on there and catch the dezign vibe apparent everywhere.

John Erik has impeccable taste when it comes to modern design.  He represents various well known brands that feature the top designers of furnishing and lighting today and there is always something fabulous to discover in his store/showroom.

He also has one of the most extensive collection of unique contemporary area rugs I have ever come across. This was just a perfect segue for me, as I was on the hunt for something new and different for an entry foyer I had just finished.  I ended up taking home a bag of rug samples, as I was so taken with the unusual designs.

The lighting available is non stop beautiful.  Two exceptional ones were hanging in the showroom, one featured hand blown glass globes, that blew me away and the other was composed of porcelain light shades cascading down from the ceiling. Both of these fabulous ceiling lights come from a company named Bocci. There are also THE MOST TERRIFIC floor lamps to be discovered here, which give the name floor lamp new meaning.

There are unusual pieces displayed all around the showroom, including a series of gorgeous metal ” bowls”  hanging on the wall that were partially constructed out of the spill over metal created when they pour the metal into a mold…how about that… which are so very exotic looking!

AND smart looking silvered/golden glass stools/tables that would look simple marvelous next to any one of the chairs in the showroom.

AND tall irregular wooden totem-like structures…forgot the name of the artisan, but these are outrageous…that were anything but sleek but just complemented the modern furnishings perfectly.

AND a bevy of outdoor furniture selections that are definitely outside of the ordinary-outdoor-furniture-box  and will bring oohs and ahhs to your mouth.  I am ready to redo my whole outside deck!

John Erik has a few of his own designs on the floor, two of which I adore. One is an extraordinary wood table with a bronze base and bronze inset in the beautiful wood top . The design is classic and forever and would make any dining room sing. He also designs a darkened steel  shelf unit/ cabinet that has an industrial feel to it but is really as chic as they come.

My last find in the showroom was the jewelry by Monica Castiglioni.  I had read about her jewelry and background…she’s the daughter of  Archille Castiglioni, famed Italian lighting designer…several years ago, but could never find her jewelry anywhere. Being a jewelryholic  I wasn’t leaving without trying on a few of the rings, which were so outstanding.  Fell in love with a double ring, i.e., for 2 fingers, made of bronze and moonstone and haven’t taken it off since I purchased it!  Can’t keep a girl away from her jewels…

Well, I think I have shown you enough dezign temptations  to make you get on the 5 & L train yourself and check out the amazing furnishings at Karkula.  If you time it right, we might just bump into each other there!
