I fell in love with J Schatz products by accidentally discovering them on the internet. Then I wrote a blog (see post) because I was so impressed by the simple beauty and original artistic hand that is obvious in each and every one of their products.
So, what did I do on my last trip to Los Angeles? I hightailed it over to their studio…after a friendly invite from Jim Schatz and his partner Peter Souza via twitter. There is nothing better than seeing the master in his studio, right? AND thank you Twitter.
Well, I had the best time and got the A to Z tour. Jim and Peter demonstrated to me how they make their products and the design aesthetic that is behind their creations. BTW, Jim is the artistic creator/designer in the company, and Peter takes care of just about everything else. AND they are both simply delightful to work with.
I adored everything but fell head over heels in love with the Brutal Coffeemaker & the mugs that go with it and the Tea Maker & the mugs that go with that. I wanted to buy the coffee pot just to have it standing on my kitchen counter…and I don’t drink coffee! AND take a look at the mug design with the handle placed near the bottom. Think about holding that mug in your hand with a warm drink inside…just too perfect for words
I am also totally obsessed by the porcelain Tableware Collection, which their catalogue describes as follows: “…with its marvelous candy colors, (it) will set the scene for a synth-pop soundtracked dinner party.” The entire collection is very organic, which I think is fabulous in dishes and they are totally light as a feather. Plus + Plus they are dishwasher safe ( yea!) and won’t chip like all of those other ceramic dishes I’ve owned and adored over the years.
I’m tuning in on the sophisticated platinum colored dishes and cups to mix in with my all white Wedgewood that I inherited from my mother. Yes, I did say Wedgewood. I think it would be a terrific look…very ying/yang dish-wise, if you know what I mean.
BTW, I ended up buying three gifts for friends while I was there: Brutal Coffee Maker & Mugs for my daughter-in-law/ Star Egg Nightlight (in Midnight Blue) for a friend’s new baby boy/a Hummingbird Feeder (in bright green & pink) for my grandkidz…which were all received with a big thank you and I love it! I like the satisfaction of giving something that is unique and well appreciated.
AND, just a little treat for myself, the Large Au Gratin in light aqua.
BTW you can purchase any of their products directly at the studio. So, if you live in or are traveling to LA get you yourself over there. All you have to do is call the studio and make an appointment: 866.344.5267.
Ciao, ciao ’til next time!
